Buyer protection on a TCG marketplace: what you should know
By Blisterr Team
Buying trading cards online means buying a promise: that the card will be shipped, that it will match the description, that it won’t be a counterfeit. Buyer protection is the mechanism that frames this promise. Here is how it works on Blisterr, including the actual procedure, and what you can check on any TCG marketplace.
What is buyer protection?
Buyer protection is a contractual program by which a marketplace commits to step in when a buyer and a seller disagree. It complements legal warranties (conformity, hidden defects) and the right of withdrawal, and it applies notably:
- when the seller is a private individual (the legal warranties and withdrawal right of the French Consumer Code don’t apply);
- when the item has a defect that wasn’t visible before delivery;
- when the parcel never arrives.
Without buyer protection, your only recourse in a dispute is the courts: expensive, slow, and often out of proportion for small amounts.
Blisterr buyer protection in detail
On Blisterr, protection applies to sales by private and professional sellers alike. It rests on a contractual commitment of 30 days, set out in article 9.2 of our terms of sale, and covers three cases:
1. Item not received
The parcel never arrived. Either the seller didn’t ship it, or the carrier lost it. You have until 30 days after the expected delivery date.
2. Item materially different from the description
The card you received doesn’t match what was advertised: overstated condition (sold NM, received EX), different version (foil listed, non-foil received), different language, undisclosed grading, hidden major defect. The window is 30 days after delivery.
3. Proven counterfeit
The card is a counterfeit, i.e. an unofficial reproduction (fake holo, fake grading label, fake card). Same window: 30 days after delivery. For a graded card, check the certification number on the grading company’s website; for an ungraded card, a professional’s opinion can help establish that it is counterfeit.
How to get a problem reviewed on Blisterr
Here is the actual procedure, step by step:
- Contact the seller. Open your order details in the app, then “Contact the seller”, and explain the problem. Many situations are settled at this stage.
- If the seller doesn’t help, contact our team by email at support@blisterr.com or on Discord, with photos and proof: photos of the card you received, a photo of the parcel, a screenshot of the carrier tracking if relevant. Stay within the 30-day window.
- We review your case. If a refund is decided, it is credited to your wallet.
Today, you contact the seller from your order, then our team by email or on Discord: there is no dedicated dispute form in the app.
What happens during the review?
Depending on the case, the Blisterr team may:
- request evidence from both parties (photos, messages, tracking);
- propose mediation: an amicable resolution between buyer and seller;
- order a full or partial refund;
- require the item to be returned at the seller’s expense.
Blisterr is not a court: we look for the fairest resolution given the evidence presented. For complex disputes or large amounts, going to court remains an option.
What about the seller’s money?
The seller is only paid after delivery and a safety delay: their wallet is credited no later than 20 days after delivery. Funds are not held for the whole 30 days, so protection doesn’t depend on the money still sitting in the seller’s wallet. In case of a justified dispute, Blisterr recovers the seller’s share (deducted from their payout, their wallet or their next payouts). The buyer’s refund is credited to their wallet.
What the protection does NOT cover
A few cases are out of scope:
The luck of the draw in live booster openings
If you buy a sealed booster during a live and the seller opens it on camera, you accept the revealed contents as they are. Protection does not cover the “bad luck” of pulling a common card instead of the one you hoped for. It still applies if the pack was resealed, if the contents are counterfeit, or if the item was damaged before opening (article 8.4 of the terms of sale).
Simply changing your mind
If the item matches the description, protection doesn’t cover a refund requested because you changed your mind. The 14-day right of withdrawal doesn’t apply to sales between private individuals; against a professional seller, it is governed by law (articles L.221-18 et seq. of the French Consumer Code) and has exceptions (article L.221-28). The rules that apply on Blisterr are in articles 8 and 9 of the terms of sale.
Sales completed off the platform
If you paid the seller by bank transfer or PayPal outside Blisterr (prohibited by our terms of sale), protection doesn’t apply. No off-platform payment gives you the right to protection or to Blisterr’s intervention.
Abusive chargebacks
An unjustified bank dispute (you received the item as described but contest the payment to get your money back) may lead to account suspension and recovery of the amount.
Buyer protection fees
On Blisterr, the “Buyer protection” line on your order is the buyer protection fee: 6.9% of the item price (shipping excluded) + €0.49, with the flat fee charged only once per order with the same seller, and only once for a whole live session. Example: for a €50 item, the fee is €3.94, i.e. €53.94 before shipping. A giveaway carries no protection fee. Details are on the Fees page.
How to check a marketplace’s buyer protection
Before buying, always check:
- The window to report a problem: by when must you act, and counted from which event (purchase, delivery, reception)?
- What happens to the funds: is the seller paid at purchase, after delivery, or after a delay? What happens if a refund is decided?
- Cases covered: item not received, not as described, counterfeit, at a minimum.
- The procedure: a button in the app, messaging, an email? Who reviews the case?
- Where the refund goes: back to your card, or to an internal balance?
- The cost, if any: is protection included, or charged to the buyer?
For the protection fees of other platforms, see our TCG marketplace comparison, as of October 5, 2026.
How to reduce risk BEFORE buying
The best buyer protection is the one you never need. A few habits:
Check the seller
- Look at their profile: photo, bio, seniority.
- Every Blisterr seller goes through an application with Stripe identity verification, then a manual review by our team.
- Read the reviews left by buyers after a delivered order: they are scored on four criteria (item quality, packaging, delivery, communication).
Ask for detailed photos
At least four photos: front, back, holo/foil at an angle, any defects. For a valuable card, ask for a video.
Prefer Live or Peek
In a live, you see the card in motion and can ask questions before bidding. The Peek is a short video that presents the item.
Prefer a graded card for valuable pieces
Choose a card graded by a recognized company (PSA, BGS, CGC) and check its certification number on the company’s website.
Read the title, the description AND the photos
Many disputes start from a partial reading. A seller may mention a defect in the description that the buyer didn’t read.
What if I’m a seller?
A claim is reviewed on the evidence. To protect yourself:
- write careful descriptions and take good photos, and mention any defect;
- keep your proof of shipping and carrier tracking;
- answer the buyer’s messages quickly: many problems get settled between you.
If a refund is decided, the seller’s share is recovered as described above. For details on payment, the wallet and fees, see the Sell on Blisterr page and our article on the wallet.
What recourse is there outside the marketplace?
If a platform’s protection isn’t enough:
- Consumer mediation (against a professional seller): free for the consumer, governed by articles L.611-1 et seq. of the French Consumer Code.
- Court conciliator (conciliateur de justice): a free service, available through justice.fr.
- Court proceedings: the competent court depends on the amount in dispute.
Conclusion
Buyer protection isn’t a technical detail: it is what sets a marketplace apart from a simple classifieds site. On Blisterr, it rests on a contractual 30-day window, three covered cases and a file reviewed by our team, with any refund credited to your wallet.
